Floods Devastating floods in the Eastern states of Indian has claimed more than hundred lives and have taken lakhs of people under its grip and lakhs of people are said to be marooned by the floodwaters. Following five days of incessant rain Orissa has been hit by floods with rivers breaching their banks. Thousands of People are going without food as the bad weather conditions has made it impossible to the administration to reach the affected people. Hundreds of villages of Balasore district of Orissa have been cut of from rest of the country and roads and communication has been disrupted.
Assam In Assam the state government and the Power firm have locked horns over the cause of who should take responsibility and pay the compensation to the affected people. Assam Chief Minister had blamed the Power firm NEEPCO for the “excess water released from Ranganadi dam without prior warning” that caused the floods. The state government has ordered an inquiry to find out the lapses on the part of the power firm. But on the other hand power firm NEEPCO has refused to own up any responsibility saying that the floods were caused by nothing else but ‘nature’s fury’.
Rescue Operations All the state governments are trying their best to deal with the situation in spite of adverse weather conditions. Though large number of boats, hundreds of personals has been deployed in the flood affected areas they are unable to reach to the thousands of victims due to the disruptions of roads and the water currents. Army jawans and air force personal have been pressed into action to rescue and provide relief to thousands of people. Meteorological department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfalls in the reason and in the upper catchment areas of Orissa that will worsen the situation.
Floods play havoc in some of the states of India every year and thousands of people get displaced. Though state governments take steps to counter the situation caused by floods, but that is not the solution. It is the responsibility of the Government as well as of the common people, to remain ready in advance to face such situations. This is a problem that is caused by nature and it can be handled only by helping the people. Though people on the initiative of government had made arrangements for them to face any grim situation, this situation further will add more to their experience to face such kind of natural disasters.
