Attack It was the deadliest terror attack ever on an Indian diplomatic mission overseas in which India’s defense attaché, a diplomat and three other staff members were among the 41 persons killed at the spot after a Taliban suicide bomber rammed a explosive-laden vehicle into the gates of the Indian Embassy in Kabul on Monday morning on July 7.More that 150 people got injured. The explosion was so powerful that it tore open the front wall of the embassy.

Time Embassy was targeted especially during the morning rush hour as to maximize the damage. The suicide bomber targeted the entering diplomatic vehicle in which Defense attaché Brig R.D. Mehta and counselor V. Venkateswara Rao were sitting. Visa seekers, nearby shopkeepers and the security staff bore the brunt of the terror strike. Causality figure kept on mounting as some of the critically wounded died later on. It was the alert security guards who thwarted the major catastrophe. If the suicide bomber could have entered the building the death toll could have been higher.

Intelligence Indian intelligence had already warned about the suspected attack and it was only because of the intelligence input that security of the embassy had been beefed up. Raw had already warned that some elements in Pakistan are not happy with India’s rising presence in Afghanistan and they had planned to attack some vital installation with the help of Taliban. Agency had also informed that attack can happen in the first week of July and it also proved right. Afghanistan government has said that this attack indicates the hand of some foreign Intelligence agency. It must be recalled that Afghan President had threatened to send troops across the Pakistan border.

Reasons India is one of the main countries that have aided Afghanistan for the development of the Infrastructure. Some elements in Pakistan are not at ease with India’s presence in middle-east. India and Pakistan has fought three wars and now Afghanistan is becoming another battle ground. India’s presence in Afghanistan has always been viewed by Pakistan with suspicion. When India sent 300 ITBP personal for the security of the Indians working in various development projects, Pakistan’s suspicion has grown more. On the other hand Taliban has denied the attack.
