Expanding Ties between India and Sri Lanka
Thursday, 17th July, 2008
Visit SAARC summit is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka early next month. It is being said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit will expand the military ties between Indian and Sri Lanka. Presently India is supplying only those arms to Sri Lanka that are defensive in nature. On the other hand Pakistan and China also supply arms and ammunition to the war torn country that has worried the Indian Government. It is the repetition of the similar situation of 1990’s when Indian government had ignored the demands of the Myanmar’s military junta that led to China’s active entry into its neighboring country.
Sensitive Situation People of the state of Tamil Nadu support the Tamils of Sri Lanka. It is a very sensitive situation. It is the main reason that Indian government has only supplied defensive weapon systems to Sri Lanka. It includes anti-air craft guns and low lying radars that are mainly to detect and thwart the LTTE’s air strikes. India is worried about the rising influence of China in the island nation. China working on many oil exploration and construction projects except the arms deals in the island country.
Indian Approach India has always supported the dialogues between the LTTE and the Sri Lanka government to keep that country united. India believes that the problem can not be solved with the use of military power because it will always keep one community against the other even after the war ends. But in the changing situation India should change its approach and that is what the Indian government is doing. Despite its people’s sympathy with the LTTE Indian government has helped the Sri Lankan government in its fight against the militant group. LTTE is loosing its ground day by day it is being expected that the war will end soon.
Other Countries Except China political situations in India’s other neighboring countries are not very enthusiastic. In Bangladesh and Pakistan influence of Islamic fundamentalists has increased a lot and their link with the Taliban and other Islamic militant groups is not hidden from the world. Political developments in Nepal are not very enthusiastic for India. Because there are direct links between nexalite militant groups of India and the Nepali Maoists. Sri Lanka is returning towards normalcy after decades of civil war and India is trying its best to help the Sri Lankan government.
