Starvation In a shocking incident, a starving girl of Madha Pradesh’s Jaballpur town committed suicide. According to ToI the mother of the girl named Sanjeeda told the police that she had not eaten anything for the last two days because their was nothing in the house that could be eaten. Her mother tried but could not get the food grains under the chief minister’s Annapurna Yojana (scheme) following which she committed suicide.
Questions This incident has raised several questions about the credibility of the various welfare schemes initiated by the central and the state government. The first question that the district administration will have to face is why she could not succeed in the getting the food grains under the chief minister’s Annapurna Yojana. That is why district collector was at pains to present the post-mortem examination of the girl in which it was stated that food particles were found in the stomach of the girl.
Schemes There are several schemes that the central and the state governments have started for the welfare of the various sections of the society. But people never get proper benefits from them. Their ignorance and the administrative corruption are the major reasons. It is a warning for the governing that in future this trend can become a major problem. Politicians will link this incident with the increased prices and will politicize the issue to exploit the feelings of the people. But on ground level a very little improvement will be done.
Reasons There are several parts in India where natural calamities damage the crops every year. Though there are various schemes lack of funds and irregularities has always prevented the people from getting the proper benefits of these schemes. At lowest level Village heads and local political leaders play an important role as for as the welfare schemes are concerned. It depends on one’s relations with these people that decide that whether a person is eligible to get the benefits of the schemes. Only those people can apply for these schemes that have ration cards or some other documents that are made on the basis of the one’s economic status. But no special criteria is followed to shortlist the eligible families.
