Militant Outfits In recent years, militants have targeted India by trigging bomb blasts to make their presence felt whenever they were under pressure of security agencies. Anti-India elements have always targeted the religious places to trigger bomb blasts as to trigger communal violence as had happened in Mumbai. Some Pakistani and Bangladeshi militant groups are actively involved in terrorist and destructive activities inside India. They are not happy with the India- Pakistan peace process. Such elements have always targeted the vital installations. Some of the Islamic organization like SIMI are also involved in such activities. During the IPL cricket series militants has triggered blasts in which more than 60 persons had died.

Silicon Valley Bangalore is the IT hub of India. It is also called Silicon Valley of India. More than 1500 IT firms are situated in the city. Offices of some of the top most IT related companies are also situated in the city that includes Wipro, Infosys Technologies, Microsoft Corp and Intel Corp. This the second major incident after the attack on Indian Institute of Sciences in which an IIT professor M C Puri had died two years ago.

Fight Some elements in India’s neighboring countries are not happy with India’s rising status and its progress in the fields of research and technology. So they are relentlessly trying to target such kind of vital Indian installations. On the other hand governments of some of the neighboring countries are not strong enough to control militant outfits who are carrying out destructive activities across the border at their free will. Internal situation of Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanks is not favorable as for as India is concerned. Governments of these countries are struggling against militants inside their own countries. In such circumstances a very little can be expected that they are able enough to contain the militant outfits. It indicates that India will have to fight the menace on its own.

Setu Samudram Project

Friday, 1st August, 2008

Project Setu Samudram, is a project that Indian government had approved. According to the project a shipping canal will be made through the Rameshwaram Island that will link the Palk Gulf and the Gulf Mennar. When this project will become a reality then ships can sail through India’s territorial waters. It will shorten the present traveling distance by 780 km and will also save the time up to 30 hours for the ships. Thus distance between India’s east and west coasts will be shortened and will also save crore’s of rupees’ that are spent of fuel.

Benefits There are 12 major and 185 minor ports on both of the east and west coasts of India. For centuries, India has trade relations with most of the world. But there is a shallow reason that is known as Adam’s Bridge that forces the ships coming from the west with their destination to east to navigate around the Sri Lankan coast. This also forces the Indian ships to navigate around Sri Lankan coast. To reduce the traveling distance between the east and west coast Setu Samudram project has been planned. That will connect Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay through north of Adam’s Bridge.

Issues There are many problems that are coming in the way of the completion of the project. These are religious, economic political and related to environment. It  is being said by some environmentalists that it will severely effect the environment. It will affect the flow of sea waters and sea life. On the other hand it saves the the coasts of India and Sri Lanka from the tsunami like natural disasters. It will equally benefit the Sri Lankan government but there is no involvement of them. But one of the main and biggest hurdle is the religious belief of Hindus. According to the Hindu Granth Ramayana Lord Ram had built a bridge over the sea to reach Sri Lanka. So Hindus are opposing the project . First, government of India had submitted before the Supreme Court that tale of Ram is only a mythology he never had existed. But on July22, 2008  GOI submitted before the SC that according to the “Kamba Ramayanam” Lord Ram himself had destroyed the bridge while returning from Sri Lanka. Thus a new controversy has aroused.

India’s unstable neighborhood is posing a big danger to its security. Most of its neighboring countries are struggling against insurgents or are in a state of political crisis. These countries includes Sri Lanka that is for last 25 years fighting a civil war on its on territory against one of the most dreaded terrorist organization called LTTE In this was thousands of people militants and military men have died. India’s former Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was also assassinated by the same terrorist organization. Though Sri Lankan military is now in upper hand but there is no guaranty that Sri Lanka will become peaceful forever after the defeat of LTTE because years of ethnic battle have  created a big rift between both of the two communities of of the island and it will take a lot of time to bridge that.

internal situation of Pakistan is deteriorating day by day. Newly government has not yet made its presence felt in Pakistan. After the downfall of Tali ban government all the militant took refuge in the Northern West Frontier Province of Pakistan. People of this area has never accepted the authority of Pakistan. This area has turned as a safe heaven for the Taliban. They their training bases in the hilly territory from where they intrude into Afghanistan and attack the coalition forces. There are close relations between Taliban and ISI that have always fueled the militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. Latest attack on Indians working in construction projects in Afghanistan and on Indian Embassy indicate that Taliban and their mentors in Pakistan are not happy with India’s increasing influence in Afghanistan.

Internal situation of Bangladesh and Nepal is also not enthusiastic for India. Influence of Islamic fundamentalists is increasing in Bangladesh. Who are with the help of ISI and Bangladesh’s secret agency fueling the insurgency in India. On the other hand Maoists in Nepal are in a commanding position after their victory in the general elections. They have fought a decade long war against the monarchy. Links between Nepali Maoists and naxalites in India can not be denied  Some of the militant outfits in  north-east states of India are also getting help form the insurgents of Myanmar. In such circumstances India is standing as a rock between the fire fighting a never ending war against insurgents that has been started against it form all sides.
