Terror visits ‘Diamond City’ Surat

Wednesday, 6th August, 2008

Bombs After Bangalore and Ahmadabad it was the ‘Diamond City’ that has been visited by the terror. It was the fortune or some technical fault that prevented the repetition of Bangalore and Ahmadabad like situation. There are many theories upon which  police investigations are based. but from the present situation, it can be said that militants have not succeeded this time in their evil designs in Surat. More than 18 live bombs of low intensity have been found from the various places of Surat city and police have managed to defuse them.

Distraction Most of the diamond polishing units are located in the Varacha area of Surat city and most of the bombs were found in and around the area. It was fortunate enough that none of the bombs exploded and were found and defused in time. Tuesday was the third consecutive day and police had defused 18 bombs. Most of the bombs were planted on trees and hoardings and were spotted mostly by public. There were no timer devices used in then and detonators of some of the bombs were not properly connected to them. It is being considered by the intelligence agencies that Surat has been chosen by the militants to distract the ongoing investigations in the Bangalore and Ahmadabad serial blasts.

Suspicion But wave of panic spread to Rajasthan when on Thursday three live bombs of low intensity packed in plastic bags, were notices by some of the villagers of Pali district on the road. They were defused on the spot. It is being considered that these serial blasts were planned and executed by some terrorist group or by the Underworld don who is presently hiding in Pakistan and has close relations with ISI.

Target For some years India has become a soft target of the militant activities. Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence is infamous for its India centric activities. It is trying every means to destabilize India by fueling insurgency all over the country. There is a close relationship between ISI and the Pak military and Taliban. It has played an important role in the establishment of madarassas in Bangladesh and Pakistan. These madarassas has turned out to be the recruiting bases of militants. Pak government has not succeeded to free it form Taliban supporting elements and exert its control over it. Though Pakistani government is trying to normalize the strained relations with India but increase in militancy has always created problems. Peace can be established only when ISI comes under the control of elected government of Pakistan and is purged from the fundamentalists who have always considered India as their number one enemy.

Damage Peace process between India and Pakistan has been severely damaged by some of the recent activities of Pakistan’s military on the LoC and the ISI’s involvement in the suicide attack on the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan. In 2003 both the countries had agreed to ceasefire on the LoC but India has claimed that Pak military have violated the ceasefire many times and but it has increased manifolds after January.

Embassy Attack Before the ceasefire Pak military used to help the infiltrators to sneak into the Indian side by providing them cover fire. But after the ceasefire infiltrations had completely stopped which resulted into a great downfall of power of militancy in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. But situation has changed after the month of June as Indian security forces have foiled innumerable infiltration bids and have killed many infiltrators. Around the same time Indian Embassy in Afghanistan was attacked by a suicide bomber which killed an Indian diplomat and some Indian security personal besides more than 50 Afghans. India had openly said it has enough evidence to prove the involvement of ISI in the act.

Firing But the worst happened in the last week of July when more than ten Pak soldiers attacked a forward position of Indian military and killed a soldier of Rajputana Rifles. It was a major violation of the ceasefire as both of the sides exchanged fire for more than 12 hours. It ended only after the flag meeting  between the senior officials of both sides. But ceasefire was once again violated when Pak military fired at an Indian post on July 29th.

Fundamentalists It is the history that infiltration increases many folds before the assembly elections in the state  of Jammu and Kashmir. As time of elections in J&K is nearing infiltration has increased. But it is impossible for the militants to sneak into the Indian side without the support of Pakistani military. Whole of the world knows that there is a close relationship between Pak military, ISI and Kashmiri militants. On the other hand ISI is controlled by the military instead of the elected government. There are many Islamic fundamentalist elements in the military and ISI who are against the peace process with a Hindu state. Besides the ceasefire they have kept on planning and helping the militant activities against India. It has severely affected the peace process between both of the countries.

Georgia Atlants City of the state of Georgia of United States was selected to host the 1996’s Summer Olympic Games in 1990 in Tokyo, Japan against the bids of Athens, Belgrade, Manchester, Melbourne and Toronto. It was being expected that Athens will be selected for games as it was 100th anniversary of the games but could not be selected because of lack of infrastructure. A record 197 nations took part in these games that included twenty four new countries. These new debutant countries included eleven ex-Soviet states and some South African and Asian counties. In these games USA won most of the medal and was followed by Russia and Germany.

Leander Paes In these games Anju George and Leander Paes were the Indian flag bearers respectively in the opening and closing ceremonies. India’s performance was slightly different from the last games.India’s only medal was a bronze medal won by Leander Paes in Men’s Singles Competition of Tennis. He won all his first three matches with ease by defeating Richey Reneberg (United States), Nicolas Pereira (Venezuela) and Thomas Enqvist (Sweden) respectively. In the quarter final match he defeated Italy’s Renzo Furlan with a huge margin of 6-1 and 7-5.But in the semi final he was defeated by the world famous US tennis player Andre Agassi. Hockey Performance of Indians in other other games was only the repetition of the previous games. Their performance in the nation game hockey was worst that the previous games and they slipped one point down as compared to the previous games’ rank. They won only two matches against US and Spain lost to Argentina and drew with Germany and Pakistan. They lost to South Korea for the 5th/8th place and were defeated by Great Britain in the match that was played for 7th/8th place. It was their worst ever performance. Only Lalremsanga Chhangte could advance to the next round of the archery out of three Indian who took part in the game. In athletics neither men nor women could advance the first round. All the three boxer disappointed the nation as they too could not win even their first matches. Richard Bera took part in Men’s 50 freestyle swimming but failed in the first round. Again Indians could not impress expect Leander Paes.
