Clash 5 farmers have died and more than 100 farmers have been injured in cross-firing and violent clashes between police and farmers in Greater Noida, on Wednesday on August 13. it is being said that condition of 15 persons is critical. More than two dozen policemen have also been injured in the incident. According to police sources only three people have died in the incident. Police had erected strong barricades made of bamboo and teen sheets to stop the agitating farmers. It was being expected that farmers will not be able to cross these barricades. But these barricades could not keep the farmers held even for a minute. Farmers had come to the spot in more than 45 tractors.
Farmers More than 2000 Farmers-mostly residents of Ghori Bachhera of Greater Noida-had gathered there who were demanding adequate compensation to be paid to them for the land acquired by the state government. In 2006 land was acquired at Rs 450 per sq. m and in 2007 Rs. 850 were paid for every sq. m. Those farmers who had sold their land in the 2003 and 2005 were demanding compensation equal to the compensation awarded in 2008. According to the government sources their demands had been reviewed twice but they were demanding more.
Violence According to the police sources farmers had brought with them fire arms and lathis also. Police used tear gas shells to disperse the agitating farmers. But when the agitation became violent police resorted to baton-charge. When it too failed to stop the violent farmers police opened fire in which five persons died on the spot. But according to farmers more than 6 people have died in the police firing. Violent farmers tried to overrun their tractors over some of the policemen. They also damaged some vehicles standing nearby which included a car and two police jeeps.
Politics This incident has raised some questions. When farmers had twice been provided with reviewed compensation then why they organized a violent agitation. And why the police personal did not resort to minimum use of force. Some people have started to exploit the situation politically who were till now sleeping and the incident have provided them with an issue for the coming elections.
