Sri Lanka Beat India in the First ODI

Result  Sri Lanka defeated India by eight wickets in the first one day international cricket match of the series of five one-dayers played in Dambula in Sri Lanka on August 18. India missed its in-form opener batsmen Virendra Sehwag a lot who could not play because of an injury. New young members of the Indian team could not handle the spin bowling or Muralitharan and Mendis well and all the team was all out for a very small score of 146 runs. They both took three wickets each by giving 37 and 21 runs respectively.   Indian Batting India had won the toss and had decided to bat first but they could not take the advantage of the toss. Chaminda Vaas gave first blow to India by bowling  out Gautam Gambhir for a duck in the very first over of the match. India was reduced to three for 36 as the next two batmen Virat Kohli (12)and  Suresh Raina fell to Nuwan Kulasekera. Third Sri Lankan seamer Thilan Thushara  took the wicket of Rohit Sharma who had made 19 runs and had shown some signs of recovery. He was caught at slip. Rest of the six wickets were taken by both of the Sri Lankan spinners. Yuvraz Singh was the highest run getter for his side as he made 23 runs. He fell to the bowling of Ajantha Mendis. Skipper Dhoni and Munaf (15) Patel were the other two victims of the bowling of Mendis. Dhoni was caught at slip by Mahela Jayawardene while Munaf Patel was bowled out.. Zaheer Khan (12), Harbhajan Singh (12) and Irfan Pathan (7) fell to Muralitharan. Zaheer Khan was caught by THushara on the bowling of Muralitharan. Harbhajan Singh was caught by Sangakara while Pathan was adjudged leg before wicked. P. Ojha remained not out for 16 runs. India missed some of its seniors who did not play because of injuries. Sri Lanka Responding to the small victory target of 147 runs, Lankan openers, too, could not give a good start to their side. Munaf Patel struck twice and the Sri Lanka was reduced to 45 runs at the loss of two important wickets of Sanath Jayasuriya  and Kumar Sangakkara.  Sanath Jayasuriya was caught at mid-on by Irfan Pathan when he had made just 10 runs while Sangakkara was caught and bowled by Munaf on his own bowling. India at Beijing Olympics(4)

Wrestling As the Olympics games in Beijing have progressed India’s hopes of winning another medal have also dashed. Some Indian players had succeeded in reaching the quarterfinal round of their respective games but could not won their quarterfinal rounds that could have assured at least a bronze medal. Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt missed the medal with a very narrow margin as he was defeated by the Japan’s Kenichi Yumoto in the 60kg freestyle category by 2-1. He had won the first round by 1-0 but could not contain the lead in the second round as his opponent equaled the points by winning four points. In the decisive third round he had taken the earlier lead by winning one point but could not hold on to it as his opponent earned two points in the last 10 seconds of the games that decided the result of the match. He had beaten Kazakhstan’s Baurzhan Orazgaliyeb by 3-1 in the pre-quarterfinal round.   Boxing Earlier Indian were cheered to hear the news that three of the Indian boxers have succeeded in reaching the quarterfinal rounds of their respective categories. It had raised hopes of winning first medal in boxing which Indian had narrowly missed in Athens Olympics. But Akhil Kumar, who had qualified in the bantamweight class, lost to Gojan of Moldova by 3-10 in the quarterfinal played on August 18. He could not break Moldova’s defense by his unorthodox methods and paid the price for his attacking and less defensive game tactics. Till the end of second round both the boxers were equally placed 2-1. But by the end of the third round, Akhil was trailing by 2-6. In the fourth and decisive round he could not do well and lost the match. He had defeated world champion Sergey Vodopyanov and 2005′s bronze medalist Ali Hallab in the earlier rounds. Rest of the boxers are yet to play their matches.   Others India’s Melbourne Commonwealth Games gold medalist winner paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal defeated Spaniard Alfredo Carneros 4-2 in the first round of men’s singles table tennis event at the Beijing Olympics played on Tuesday. He had lost he opening game but won the rest except the fourth. Another huge disappointment to the Indian athletics was failure of woman long-jumper Anju Bobby George who could not qualify for the final. All her attempts were fouls. Clashes in J&K -15 Die

Clashes Fifteen protesters died in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday when security personal opened fire on the violent protesters in various parts of the state. Both of the regions have stood up against each other because of the land transfer issue. In both parts hard line political parties have exploited the issue which has flared the public angers. State and Center governments, Hurriyat and Hindu Organizations are equally responsible for whole of the communal rift between both of the regions, damage to the public and private property and losses of many human lives. State government failed to handle the crisis when it was in its initial stages. Center government ignored the situation for almost one month. Hurriyat misguided the Kashmiri people on the issue of land transfer which forced the government to roll back its earlier decision and it was followed by Jammu agitations headed by radical Hindu organizations.   Kashmir Protests A Hurriyat leader named Abdul Aziz Sheikh with five supporters had died in police firing when he was leading a cavalcade of apple laden trucks towards Muzaffarabad-a PoK city-as a protest to the blockade of national highway by the Jammu agitators. After it, situation in Kashmir has become vary tense. Hundreds of people have got injured because of clashes between police and protesters. Tuesday, August 12, turned out to be one of the worst days in the history of the state as 15 persons have died in the state because not only because of police-protester clashes but because of communal clashes between two communities.   Communal Clashes Three protesters died in the Lajson town of Kashmir when they attacked the house of a PDP leader. Three protesters died in Paribal when they were pelted stones in an isolated military picket and did not disperse despite repeated appeals by the soldiers. But one of the worst incident happened in Kishatwar town of Kashmir when a mob attacked houses of Hindu minority. Police had to open fire to prevent any major incident from happening. Two persons had died in the incident. It must be noted that Kashmir is a Muslim dominated area and Jammu is dominate by Hindus.   Blockade Hurriyat has misguided the people of Kashmir by raising the issue of economic blockade which has not happened on the ground.
