Political Crisis in Jharkhand

Monday, 25th August, 2008

Deal The bargaining done before the trust motion between Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Chief Shibu Soren and Congress has started to show its results. Earlier JMM chief had to resign from the cabinet because of corruption and murder charged but was later on acquitted by the court. Since then he was demanding to be reinstated in the cabinet again but was sidelined by the Congress. But  tide turned in his way as Congress led alliance had to prove its majority in the Lok Sabha following the withdrawal of support by its Left allies in the wake of Indo-US n-deal. Congress succeeded in saving the government from earlier downfall by somehow mustering the required support.  Indian public and the world was amused vary much to see the on-sale MPs who changed their sides many times everyday. Congress had won the trust motion with the crucial support of JMM. It was being said that it could become possible only because of the underground political deal between both of the parties but nothing was evident till now.

Figures Now its has become clear that what was the understanding between both of the parties as JMM Chief withdrew the support to Madhu Koda’s 23 month old state government. JMM has 17 legislators in the house while Koda has support of only 25 legislators. Shibu Soren had staked his claim to become the Chief Minister of the state on August 12 but Koda had refused to step down. Koda is an independent who was being supported by some smaller parties, eight independents as well as by UPA constituents Congress, Rashtriya Janta Dal and JMM. Meanwhile, Jharkhand Governor Syed Sibte Razi asked him to prove his majority in the house before August 25.

Crisis JMM has only 33 legislators in a house of 81, who will vote in favor of it while the independents are not happy with the move. On the other hand BJP and Jharkhand Governor Syed Sibte Razi are demanding dissolution of the house and early elections. Jharkhand has three governments in three years and for fourth one attempts are being made by JMM. The present political crisis in the state of Jharkhand is the outcome of the deal between JMM and Congress. The current situation shows that none of side will melt down from its stand and state will face President’s rule.
