Power Game In West Bengal(India)
article written by krishna.
Seize These days a small town of West Bengal named Singur is in headlined because of Trinamool Congress leader Mamta Benerjee’s agitation against Tata’s Nano project. Construction and production work at the plant has severely been affected. Mamta led agitators have laid a seize around the Nano plant which forced the management of the company to stop the work. Her agitation has caused road blockade also. Thousands of trucks are stranded at the road which has put more pressure on the state government because it has caused scarcity of fruit and vegetables that will result in public dissatisfaction with the state government.
Land Her agitation against the Tata’s was being seen as the struggle for land between the farmers and the industrialists. But her political motifs got exposed when she refused to all the dialog invitations sent to her by state government, Governor and the Tata company. She is demanding that 400 hundred acres of land should be given back to the farmers. On the other hand Tata management has said it clearly that the land is required by them as it will be used to construct ancillary units that are necessary to keep the costs low for the production of world’s cheapest car.
Politics Ratan Tata had already warned that they will move the project out of the state if the agitations continue. Company has made its intentions clear that it is worried about the security of the staff instead of huge financial losses that it will suffer if it moves out of the state. But Mamta Benerjee, herself has become the ‘messiah’ for the farmers though a few are demanding their land back. She is using the land issue just for the political gains. She had successfully used the Nandigram issue in the last election and had improved her political records. But Tata issue has placed her in a very tight place. If Tata departs from the state it will send wrong signals in the corporate world about the state of Bengal that will severely hit the investment in the state. One the other hand She will loose her Urban as well as the rural support. Majority of the Bengalis want Tata to stay in the state. She is fighting a battle that she will certainly loose. She is trying to project ‘Right as Left and Left as Right’. For her political interests, she has put the future of WB at stake. And whole of the issues has become a power political power game between the Left and Trinamool Congress.
