Singur Seize Ends

Monday, 8th September, 2008

Seize Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Benerjee called of her dharna at the Singur Nano Plant after reaching an agreement with the state government on Sunday night. After three days’ marathon talks between Chief minister and Trinamool leaders Singur seize ended. Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi had mediated in the talks. It was first time that Chief Minster Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Mamta Benerjee had come to table.

Demands Mamta, along with her supporters had laid seize to Tata’s Nano plant in Singur. She was demanding that the land of unwilling farmers should be given back. During the 15-day-long siege of the plant halted the production work.  Trinamool workers and the protesting farmers had even assaulted Tata employees working at the plant. Following it Tata management had announced to move the Nano plant out of West Bengal. Tata warning had shook the state government as well as the agitating Trinamool Congress party. Mamta Benerjee had successfully exploited the land acquisition issue in the previous elections. But Tata’s departure could wipe out her urban vote bank. Some of her party workers had deserted her during the seize because of her adamant approach. In such circumstances she too wanted to end her agitation by getting something ’substantive’. Agreement between state government and her has legitimated her demands and has also fulfilled her political motifs at the cost of economical development of the state.

Agreement According to the agreement state government will constitute a committee that will consider the demands of the unwilling farmers and will submit its report within seven days. And those farmers who have not accepted compensation for the acquired land, will we given maximum land in the project area and the rest in the adjacent areas.

Uncertainty But the problems has not ended yet. Work at Nano project remained suspended even on Monday. Tata announcement on Monday in which it was said that work will not be resumed because of the limited clarity on the outcome of talks between state government and protesters has once increased uncertainty over Tata stay in the state. Tata has already returned 40 of the 997 acres of the land leased to them and has said that it can not return more land. According to PTI Tata Motors has said. “We will review our stated position only if we are satisfied that the viability of the project is not being impinged, the integral nature of the mother plant and our ancillary units are being maintained, and all stakeholders are committed to develop a long term congenial environment for smooth operations of the plant in Singur,”

Monday, 8th September, 2008

Victory Another chapter was added to the history of Pakistan on Saturday September 6 when Widower of PPP chief late Benazir Bhuto got elected the next President of Pakistan. Both the houses of Parliament and four state assemblies take part in the election of President of Pakistan. He secured 281 out of the valid 436 votes in both of the houses of Parliament. Ten votes were declared invalid. He also swept polling in three out of four provincial assemblies. He got 107 out of 124 votes in NWFP assembly. In Baluchistan assembly he won 59 out of 63 votes while in Sindh assembly he secured 162 out of 168 votes. Thus he became the legal elected president of Pakistan after the departure of Parvez Musharraf who had resigned to avoid the impeachment process by the PPP-PML(Q) alliance. It must be noted that PML had pulled out of the alliance and had fielded their own candidate in the presidential election.

Power
With his victory in the Presidential election, Asif Ali Zardari has become the most powerful man in the history of Pakistan. Powers of Prime Minister are also in his hands as he is also the co-chairman of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Thus it can be said that he can do constructive as well as destructive amendments in the constitution of the nation that can strengthen the democracy or strangulate it. Presently he enjoys the maximum power as a president because of the undemocratic constitutional amendments carried out by Musharraf regime. He is the most powerful elected president of Pakistan as he can dissolve the Parliament and can elect the new Army Chief. He is also backed by US administration as he has expressed his anti-Taliban views and is also committed to work on the peace process between India and his Pakistan.

Future
Some people have expressed fears also because Zardari has remained in jail for more than a decade and had faced physical and mental problems during that time. If he uses his excessive powers just to take revenge form his enemies then he will do a severe damage to the future of democracy in Pakistan because it is not the time to carry out personal agenda as Pakistan is, at present, facing a lot of problems that are danger to its integrity. At one end US forces are striking deep inside the Pakistan targeting militant high outs which is the clear sign of the failure of Pakistani government and the Military and on the other hand Islamic fundamentalist backed by Taliban have established themselves very well inside Pakistan. His future course of action will decide the fate of integrity of Pakistan. He will have to take some positive steps that will strengthen democracy as well as his political position in Pakistan. It will also show how correct and powerful he is, morally and politically.
