World Recognizes India As A Nuclear Power
Tuesday, 9th September, 2008
NSG Waiver On Saturday, September, 6 India became the first nuclear weapons power which has been allowed to do nuclear trade even without signing Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty or Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. After three days of negotiations a Strong 45 Nuclear Suppliers Group lifted the ban on nuclear trade with India. A ban had been imposed on India after it’s 1974’s Pokharan test . It must be learnt that India has remained committed to the guidelines of CTBT and NPT even without signing them. NSG waiver is a great victory of joint efforts of Indian and US diplomacy which is the result of India’s commitment to non-proliferation.
Co-operation NSG waiver has provided India access to full civilian nuclear co-operation with the rest of the world which will strengthen relations between India and the other powerful nations of the world. It will not open the doors for India to access the nuclear fissile material and technology but also to co-operation in these fields. Nuclear trade will bring US and several key European countries closer to India.
Environment With NSG waiver India has become able to meet its rising energy demands without presenting any danger to the environment. Changing environment has caused many natural calamities in all over the world. Global warming is being seen as the biggest threat to the human existence on the earth. But with the NSG waiver India can access the nuclear fuel for its reactors that produce electricity. Coal run Thermal Plants are the major source of electricity in India. Emission of gases cause global warming. But with the nuclear thermal plants India will be able to cut gas emissions which is environment friendly.
Uninterrupted Supply India is the world’s second fastest growing economy and with the economic development, its energy requirements are also growing. India meets its energy requirements largely by importing petroleum products from the middle east. But rising fuel prices, geography of the reason, political uncertainty and regional conflicts are a big threat to uninterrupted fuel supply. Nuclear energy is the only option that can ensure uninterrupted energy supply to industry.
Thus NSG waiver has given a big boost to the industrial growth in India and has also opened big business opportunities to several nuclear states.
