Former Punjab CM Amaninder Expelled From Assembly
Thursday, 11th September, 2008
In an unprecedented decision, Punjab Assembly stripped of former Chief Minister Amaninder Singh of the membership of 13th Punjab Vidhan Sabha for the remaining term of three and half years on Wednesday. A house committee had indicted him in a graft case. Punjab assembly adopted resolution in which State Vigilance Bureau Director has been directed to register a FIR and investigate against all the Three accused who have been named in the House committee’s report. The house has also wrote to the Election Commission of India to declare his Patiala City seat vacant. When resolution was was presented for House’s approval all the Congress legislatures along with Capt Amaninder Singh staged a walk out.
It was Amaninder’s own party man Congress MLA Bir Davinder Singh who had raised the issue of land scam in Amritsar Improvement Trust when Amaninder was the CM. Amaninder had assured the House that a committee will will be formed that will submit its report to the House but it was never formed. After the elections, SAD-BJP alliance returned to power and Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon formed a committee in which equal number of Congress members were also included. In its report committee had indicted Amaninder Singh, former Local Bodies Minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh and former MLA and Chairman, Improvement Trust Amritsar Jugal Kishore Sharma. Meanwhile Amaninder Singh has challenged his expulsion move in Punjab and Haryana High Court.
There are wide spread reactions to this expulsion move. Some people have termed it an undemocratic move. Some have termed it as a “political vendetta.” Amaninder was Punjab’s CM from 2002 to 2007. During his rule Akali Dal (B) chief Prakash Singh Badal and his son were arrested under corruption charges. And now same has happened with Amaninder Singh. It is being said that political battle is being fought by both of the leaders with “personal” interests.
After the murder of former Punjab Congress Chief Beant Singh, state Congress party does not have a charismatic personality who could match Badal’s stature. Congress has always failed to play a constructive role as an opposition because of its internal disputes. Though Amaninder was Chief minister of the state, he too was very far away from the ground realities. Instead of leading Punjab towards progress he used his tenure to take revenge from Badals. If he is suffering today, it is because of his own wrongdoings.
