Militants Biggest Threat To Pakistan

Saturday, 1st November, 2008

Situation Pakistan is reaping what its’ dictators had been sowing for years. Today, situation inside Pakistan is deteriorating day by day. US forces are carrying out attacks against the Taliban militants inside Pakistan’s territory which has put a question mark on its sovereignty. Militants are carrying out suicide attacks even inside the most secure areas. Its military forces are fighting against the Taliban militants in the NWFP and no end is in sight to the war in near future. Pakistan’s economy is in shambles. But still, for most of the Pakistani establishment India is the biggest threat. Pakistan has always taken India as a biggest threat for its existence. All the successive Pakistani ‘rulers’ spent more on defense instead of building and developing the nation.

Threat But recent developments have opened Pakistan’s eyes that they can not befool themselves by perceiving India as the biggest threat. In recent months hundreds of people have died in bomb explosions and these bomb attacks were carried out by Taliban suicide bombers. Taliban is the same terrorist outfit which Pakistan had created with the help of USA to oust the Soviet forced from Afghanistan. Later on  Pakistan joined hands with USA in its war against terror. It is the irony that same Pakistani Military that had created the Taliban giant, is fighting against it. In all the developments Pakistan itself is responsible .

Change In the early years of Musharraf rule, Pakistan economy had progressed at a high speed and it was being expected that it will become another emerging Asian economy in the coming years. But ‘war on terror’ had put breaks on its economic marching. Political instability, security problems and failing economy has put a question mark one Pakistan’s existence. Pakistan has reached at such a position that some think tanks have started to call it an ‘international migraine’. Foreign investors are not showing any interest in its economy and international financial crisis has aggravated the situation for Pakistan. On the other hand Pakistan and India have normalized their relations. They have taken many steps that have increased confidence on each other. In such circumstanced it will be wrong to say that India is Pakistan’s biggest enemy.

Incident Once again another Indian state Police force is in highlights and this time it are four constable of the Gorakhpur(UP) who have brought shame to their department. According to the reports’ four constables in Gorakhput had allegedly held hostage 6 Nepali boys and girls and had sexually exploited some of the girls. The cops had allegedly held 5 girls and 3 boys in a room of the Mallick Guest House in the city. Some one had informed the Inspector general, who had rushed a special squad to the spot and rescued the holed up boys and girls. Two of the accused constables were suspended immediately and an inquiry has been initiated into the matter.

Other Incidents This incident has once again raised questions on the working of the Police. In recent months innumerable incidents have come to the light in  which cops were found guilty of negligence of duty and some times even indulged in illegal activities. A few months ago, some cops of the Delhi police were found red handed drinking with a murderer. A few weeks ago a nun and a priest were thrashed in front of the Orissa police constables and they had done nothing to save the ‘victims’. Later on that nun was raped in a nearby building. When she reported the matter to local police station, instead of registering a FIR she was asked to ‘forget’ the incident. Later on Orissa government had suspended six cops but it had happened only after the international pressure.

Reasons All these incidents are the indication that police departments of various states are misusing their powers. Though we can not blame the whole police set-up but it can not be denied that police departments need an over-haul. Today India is suffering from terrorism and terrorists are using new techniques to carry out their activities but on the other hand police departments are not provided with adequate equipment. Lack of modern weapons is the reason behind high casualty rate in the Maoists related violence. Police departments follow the same rules that were made during the British rule. If cops commit some crimes, some of them can be related to work stress. But to handle the problem government will have to change the police departments at a large scale.

Reports
Death toll in Thursday’s serial blasts in Assam have risen more than to 70 and many are still missing. It is for the first time that Assam has faced death and destruction at such a large scale. Though bomb blasts are not new for the people of the state but it is the first time that terrorists have targeted the civilians. Indian intelligence agencies are suspecting that Jehadis, have opened a new front from the northeastern side. It is being suspected that northeast-based terrorist outfits are carrying out the attacks. It has also been suspected that Harkat-ul-Jehadi-e-Islami (HuJI)-a Bangladesh based terrorist outfit is triggering bomb blasts in northeastern parts of India with the help of All Tripura Tiger Force and Ulfa. It is being also said that Ulfa and HuJI have joined hands and are carrying out attacks jointly.

Terrorist Ou
tfits For last some time Ulfa has been rendered very weak as most of its cadres have deserted the outfit and had opted to hold talks with the government and some of its main leaders have been killed by the security forces. It has also lost its public support. But on the other hand Ulfa has denied its involvement in the blasts and has expressed sympathies to the ‘dead and the injured’. An Ulfa leader in his statement to the media has said that it was the ‘handiwork of security forces to divert attention from the (alleged) rape at Rowta in Udalguri”.

Nexus
All the main terrorist organizations of northeast-Ulfa, KLO and ATTF- are now based in Bangladesh and carrying out their activities against the Indian authorities jointly. It has also become clear that these outfits also have built close relations with some newly-formed Islamic fundamentalist outfits of the northeast. Some reports also indicate that HuJI, also has close relations with PLA, UNFA and Manipur based terrorist outfit PREPAK. Local terrorist outfits, ISI and DGFI help HuJI-B to carry out its field operations. Meanwhile, a new terrorist outfit, Islamic Security Force-Indian Mujahideen’ (ISF-IM) have taken the responsibility of carrying out the serial blasts in Assam. It has also established links between the previous serial blasts and Assam blasts. According to the forensic reports RDX and TNT was used in the bombs.
