Win Roger Federer, Switzerland tennis player, created history on Sunday, July 5, 2009 when he won the Singles final of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship played in the England Club in London. With this win he has broken former Tennis player Pete Sampras’s record of 14 grand slam wins. He won 15th grand slam of his tennis career and has thus created a history. He defeated US player Andy Roddick in the tough fought final. This final match proved out to be a very long and tough match in which he proved out his metal though the match was fought very closely. Federer won it with 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6 and 16-14. Points tally depicts how the match was evenly balanced even to its last moments. One of the interesting points is that the last set of the men’s final proved out to be the longest set in the history of Wimbledon.

Career The first set was won by Andy Roddick. In the second set he gave a tough fight to Federer but he lost it. In the third set Federer did his utmost to win the set and succeeded after a very tough fight. In the final set both the players gave their best and tried till the last to win the match. With this win he has won 15 gland slams titles and has also moved to the No. 1 spot for the first time since August, 2008. It must be learnt that he had been replaced by Spanish player Rafael Nadal. He had remained at the No.1 rank for 237 consecutive weeks before that. It was also his 20th grand slam final which is also a history. Including this title, Federer has won 6 Wimbledon titles, 5 US Open titles. 3 Australian Open titles and 1 French Open title. Another interesting fact of this final was it that Pete Sampras, Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg, themselves had come to see the match.  As for as Andy Roddick is concerned he has won only one grand slam title in his test career and it was US Open tournament title of 2003. Except it he had reached the finals of the 2004 and 2005 Wimbledon tournament and was defeated by Federer both the times. After his 2006 US Open final it was for the first time that he was playing in the final of a grand slam tournament. Pete Sampras has always called him “an icon and a legend”. Both the men were at their best as for as the serve was concerned. They served with a great power and without making much mistakes which is the sign of their maturity. After the final golfer Kenny Penny praised both the players by saying that,’Great players make it happen. Average players don’t’. As Andy Roddick’s mis-hit forehand landed outside the baseline all the three former Tennis greats stood up to applaud both the finalists.

Paes and Black Lose Indian hopes of another grand slam win were dashed to ground when Leander Paes and his partner Cara Black of Zimbabwe lost in the mixed doubles final of the Wimbledon Championship. They were top seeded pair and were hot favorites to win the title but ninth seeded Bahamian Mark Knowles and his German partner Anna-Lena Groenefeld stunned the Indian-Zimbabwean pair by winning the five straight games though they were trailing by 5-2 once in the first set. After that Paes and Black could not recover and lost the second set tamely by 3-6.
