Chennai Super Kings became IPL 3 champion: Final match of third edition of Indian Premier League was played between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. Many bollywood stars performed before the final match and stadium was full with people. Mumbai Indians had reached into semi final round after winning ten of their fourteen league matches. They were at top in IPL tally of this season after all league matches. In semi final match, they defeated previous season’s runner up team, Royal Challenger Bangalore by 35 runs. Chennai Super Kings had won seven of their fourteen league matches but due to good net run rate along with that, they made into semi final round. In semi final match, they faced previous edition’s champion Deccan Chargers and defeated them by 38 runs to qualify for the final match. In final match, MS Dhoni, skipper of Chennai Super Kings won the coin toss and elected to bat first with aim of setting a big total to put opponent team in pressure. They scored 168 runs in twenty over losing their five wickets. Mumbai Indians failed to get the winning total and at end of twenty over, they were at 146 runs losing their nine wickets. Chennai Super Kings won the match by 22 runs and they made tournament at their name as well. Suresh Raina of Chennai Super Kings was given man of match award for his brilliant performance in the match while Sachin Tendulker, skipper of Mumbai Indians got man of the series award for his consistent performance in the tournament and scoring highest runs from his bat.

Chennai Super Kings innings: Skipper MS Dhoni had decided to bat first. Murli Vijay along with Mathew Hayden started the inning for Chennai Super Kings. Initial overs were too low run scoring but with time Murli Vijay started hitting big shots. Murli Vijay scored 26 runs off 19 balls with one four and two sixes in his inning. He was caught by Tiwary on the ball or Fernando when team was at total of 44 runs in 7.2 over. In next over, Mathew Hayden was caught by wicket keeper Rayudu on the ball of Pollard. He played slow game and scored 17 runs off 31 balls with one four and one six in his steady inning. Chennai Super Kings lost their second wicket as Mathew Hayden when team was at total of 47 runs. Badrinath tried to add some runs for team but Malinga caught his catch on the ball of Fernando, when he was playing at an individual score of 14 runs off 11 balls with the help of two fours. Skipper M S Dhoni joined Suresh Raina to handle the situation for team and made partnership of 72 runs for fourth wicket. Team lost their fourth wicket as skipper. He was caught by Fernando on the ball of Zaheer Khan. He scored quick 22 runs off 15 balls with two fours and one six in his inning. Morkel was next man to bat for Chennai Super Kings and started hitting big shots. He lost his wicket durining running between the wickets on third ball of last over. He scored 15 runs off just six balls with one four and one six in his inning. S Anirudha was unbeaten at 6 runs off 3 balls with one four. Suresh Raina played brilliant inning and was unbeaten at 57 runs off 35 balls with three fours and three sixes in his extraordinary inning. At the end of 20 over, Chennai Super Kings were at total of 168 runs after losing five wickets. It was highest total off three final matches of Indian Premier League and previous matches at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy were low scoring as well. Fernando took two wickets for Mumbai Indians while Pollard and Zaheer Khan managed to get one wicket each.

Mumbai Indians innings: Chennai Super Kings set a target of 169 runs to win for Mumbai Indians. Shikhar Dhawan started the inning for Mumbai Indians along with skipper Sachin Tendukar. Mumbai Indians had a bad start as team lost their first wicket as Shikhar Dhawan who did not even open his run account and wasted eight balls. Mumbai Indians were at total of one run only when lost their first wicket and AM Nayar joined skipper in middle. Nayar played good game but lost his wicket during running between the wickets. He added 27 runs of 26 balls with one four and two sixes in his inning. Sachin Tendulkar and Nayar made partnership of 66 runs for second wicket. Harbhajan Singh was next man to bat for Mumbai Indians. He was sent in middle for hitting big shot but he failed and was found leg before wicket on the ball of Suresh Raina. He scored just one run from his bat. Mumbai Indians lost their third wicket at total of 73 runs. Skipper, Sachin Tendulkar was playing good inning and was at an individual score of 48 runs off 45 balls with seven fours when Murli Vijay caught him on the ball of Jakati. Saurabh Tiwary joined Rayudu in middle but lost his wicket on the second ball he faced without scoring any run from his bat. He was caught by Suresh Raina on the ball of Jakati. Mumbai Indians lost their five batsmen at total of 100 runs in 14.5 over. JP Duminy also failed to add much for team and lost his wicket after adding six runs off seven balls. He was caught by Jakati on the ball of Muralitharan. Pollard gave some hope to Mumbai Indians by hitting some big hits from his bat. Rayudu lost his wicket during running between the wickets when he was at an individual score of 21 runs off 14 balls with one four and one six. On the very next ball Pollard also lost his wicket and all hopes of team ended with him. He scored quick 27 runs off just 10 balls with three fours and two sixes in his short inning. In last over, Zaheer Khan lost his wicket on third ball he faced. At the end of twenty over, Mumbai Indians were at total of 146 runs and lost match by 22 runs.Jakati got two wickets for Chennai Super Kings while Bollinger, Mokel, Muralitharan and Raina managed to get one wicket each.
