Hurriyat Leader Killed in Police Firing

Sunday, 17th August, 2008

March A separatist Hurriyat leader Sheikh Abdul Aziz was killed on Monday in police firing. He was leading the march of thousands of protesters who were marching towards the PoK. A total of five people have died and more than 150 got injured in the police action when they used tear gas shells, lathicharge and fired at the violent protesters. People were marching towards PoK as a protest to the so called ‘economic’ blockade of the valley by the Jammu Hindu population. Hurriyat and some main stream political parties had given a call for the march in support of the apple growers . It was supported by Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kashmir Fruit Growers’ Association, Traders Federation and Lashkar-e-Toiba- a terrorist group.

Action State administration had placed some top Hurriyat and PDP leaders in house arrest on Sunday night as a move to prevent them from joining the Muzaffrabad march on Monday morning. Protesters were demanding opening of the road link between both of the divided parts of Kashmir so that they can sell their main crop of apples in the open market by the alternative road link as traffic between Jammu and Kashmir has severely been affected because of the Jammu agitations. Police deflated tires of some trucks and used tear gas shells when they were taking out a large cavalcade of fruit laden trucks towards Muzaffrabad.

Government Hurriyat has exploited the land transfer issue by portraying it as an India vs Kashmir Issue. But the way in which Jammu nationalists protested the revocation orders everyone was stunned to see the development. Hurriyat and PDP is mainly responsible for the present crisis in the valley. But the situation has raised some questions also about the Center government’s stand to address the issue. It is the history that Congress led government’s have never handled the Kashmir issue properly. When the state was burning they were busy playing political maneuvers in Delhi to save their government.

Retirement Bringing every kind of speculations to a halt Lok Sabha Speaker Som Nath Chatterjee  has said that he will retire after the end of his term. It must be recalled that he is the veteran communist leader who had won ten times as a MP. But he had declined to resign as Lok Sabha Speaker after his parties’ decision of withdrawal of support to the UPA government. This issue had triggered a wave of discussions not in political circles but in public also. It is considered that when ever a MP is elected as a Speaker of Lok Sabha he becomes a neutral leader and distances himself from his political party.

somnath-chatterjee-will-retire-at-the-end-of-his-term1.jpeg

Tradition Though there are very few examples when any Speaker had followed the tradition but Som Nath Chatterjee  has set an example. It is a pity that he has been treated badly by his own party. There are very few arguments as his party is following its ideology and on the other hand Chatterjee is following the tradition, a character that is rarely shown the political leaders especially in India. During the trust motion it was being expected that Chatterjee  will resign before the voting following the party whip. But it did not happened and UPA succeeded in winning the trust move.

somnath-chatterjee-will-retire-at-the-end-of-his-term2.jpeg

Public According to the latest reports Chatterjee  has decided that he will retire from the active politics after the end of his term as a Lok Sabha Speaker. Public of India had overwhelmingly supported him though his party has expelled him.  He has sacrificed his political career but has made every Indian  proud the way  he has kept the prestige of the chair and followed the tradition in true sense.

somnath-chatterjee-will-retire-at-the-end-of-his-term3.jpeg

Issue Chatterjee  had followed his own agenda of not taking part in the affairs of his party during his term as a Speaker and has distanced himself from his party. Though he had done it on his own but had kept on renewing his party membership. But his expulsion from his party and his retirement has caused an issue to arise that there should be some kind of rule that if a MP is selected as a Speaker he should resign temporarily  from his party for his tenure

Public Cash for vote scam is still haunting the ruling and opposition parities of India. Nuclear deal between Indian and USA has revealed many hidden truths of Indian politics. Though it was being expected that it will be very difficult for the government to achieve the ultimate goal as many of the IAEA board of governors and NSG counties had reservations against the Indo-US n-deal. But before it that Indian government could reach the IAEA board of governors it had to pass the first hurdle at home. UPA government had to prove its majority in the Parliament. Though Manmohan Singh led government has succeeded in proving its majority in Lok Sabha the political developments that happened during the testing time has left the Indian public astonished and disappointed.

cash-for-vote-scam-still-haunting-political-parties1.jpeg

Sting Operation Every one was shocked to see the open display of money in the Parliament. Allegations made by BJP MPs against the SP leaders have indicated that a lot of money power was used to muster the required votes.  But what is disappointing is that both of the parties are indulged in the blame game and nothing has happened that could clear the air of suspicion. BJP MPs had succeeded in filming the whole bribe incident in a sting operation with the help of a famous TV channel but it has not been still aired. From the present situation it looks that the renowned TV channel is under tremendous political pressure from both of the sides.

Democratic Values Both of the parties are blaming that the video recordings have been tempered with or are a concocted evidence. Whatever the reality is it will take some time  for the  truth to surface but one thing is very clear that it will be a big issue in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections and UPA and its outside supporters will have to pay the price for it. UPA government has used every kind of means to stay in the power by projecting the n-deal as most desired for the bright future of India. It used even the support of criminal MPs to win the trust motion. Though it has won the trust motion but has lost the public who believed it. In recent elections we have seen that educated people have ceased to take much interest in the elections and such political revelation have further affected their belief in the democratic values.

Kashmir Vs Jammu-The Reasons

Wednesday, 13th August, 2008

Crisis It is the testing time for the Indian democracy as India was severely jolted by the internal and external threats and also by the political crisis during the months of July and August. First it was cash for vote scam them serial bomb blasts and now the rift that has surfaced between Jammu and Kashmir following the Amarnath land issue. Some of the regional parties tried to exploit the issue but soon the situation slipped out of their hands and the most of the agitations in Kashmir were headed by Hurriyat a pro-Pakistani party. In such circumstances these regional parties lost their command over the people of the region. Now they are neither trusted by Kashiris nor by the people of Jammu.

kashmir-vs-jammu-the-reasons1.jpeg

Blockade But the land row has increased the rift between Jammu and Kashmir following the mass agitations in both of the regions. Situation worsened  because of the road blockade between Jammu and Kashmir that severely affected the Kashmir region. Hurriyat and other anti-India elements has exploited the situation by terming the Jammu agitations as an economic blockade of the Kashmir region which is helped by government of India. They are trying to present the  divide between both of the reasons as a rift between Hindus of Jammu and Muslims of Kashmir. It is being projected by them that Jammu agitations are headed by Hindu radicals who have forced the economic blockade of the Kashmir region disrupting the supply of essential goods and life saving medicines.

kashmir-vs-jammu-the-reasons2.jpeg

Results But those people who are closely watching the developments in the region have totally adverse views of the situation. According to them it is not a rift between Muslims and Hindus but a  difference between national and anti-national people of the region. During the agitations in Kashmir tri-color was burnt by the agitators on the other hand agitators in Jammu are agitating against the soft stand of the central and state governments towards the anti- national elements of Kashmir region while holding the tri-colors in hands with full respect. It is not the Hindu agitation but a rising of India against the years of blackmail ship and militancy by the pro-Pakistani elements. It is only the Jammu region if the situation is not handled properly by the government then the agitations will expand to the other parts of India and the central government will have to take hard steps against the pro-Pakistani Kashmiri elements that it had not taken in 1989 when thousands of Hindus were killed and forced to flee from valley.

Pakistan’s Political Crisis worries India

Wednesday, 13th August, 2008

Crisis It is the history that political situations in Pakistan takes dramatic changes immediately and this time again the same is going to happen very soon. After the elections in Pakistan everyone was expecting that it will bring back the economy to the track and also the political crisis will be solved and dismissed  judges will be restored. But new formed government could not do anything special and the political situation in Pakistan went on deteriorating. On the other hand influence of Islamic fundamentalists has kept on growing that was the cause of concern as its neighboring county Afghanistan is fighting a war with the help of nato forces against Talibani militants who are hiding in the NWFP of Pakistan.

pakistans-political-crisis-worries-india1.jpeg

Power Centers After the formation  of new government power had been divided into two parts at the one end was newly elected government and at the other end President Musharaf backed by Military and ISI. Both the power centers were struggling to gain the upper hand. Public was equally frustrated by both of the power centers and was slowly but steadily slipping towards Islamic fundamentalists. For USA and India it was an alarming situation as Pakistan is a nuclear state and if it falls the fundamentalists’ way then it will be a global threat. Pakistani fundamentalists have a history of backing the militancy not only  in India but all over the world.

pakistans-political-crisis-worries-india2.jpeg

Peace-Process Now PPP led alliance have decided to clip the wings of President and it is being expected that next week will be crucial in the history of Pakistan as it will decide the fate of the President and the elected  government. India favors a democratic Pakistan. People of both of the countries as well and the elected governments want strong relations between both of the countries that are not possible during the military rule in Pakistan because Pakistani military backed by ISI is directly related to militancy in India and Afghanistan. In such circumstances peace process between both of the nations can not achieve the desired goals. It the present political crisis in Pakistan takes a long time to solve then it will harm the peace process severely as we have seen that nothing substantial have happened after the formation of the new government in Pakistan. For India, There is no difference between a failed Pakistan and military ruled Pakistan as in both situations Islamic fundamentalists gain ground .

india-at-beijing-olympics3.jpeg

Badminton Saina Nehwal entered the quarter finals of the women’s badminton championship on Monday in the Beijing Olympic games. This news has cheered the Indians. In the pre-quarterfinals she stunned Hong Kong’s player Chen Wang who is ranked fourth in the world. She defeated her 21-19, 11-21, 21-11 in the match. But other Indians could not do well in their respective games as most of them disappointed the nation with their poor performance. Shuttler Anup Sridhar’s Olympic campaign ended in the second round as he was defeated by Shoji Sato of Japan in straight sets. It was a disappointing show by the Indian as his campaign ended only in 37 minuted.

india-at-beijing-olympics1.jpeg

Archers Both the Indians Dola Banerjee and L Bombayla Devi could not perform well in the deciding moments of women’s individual archery events. They crashed out of the event as they lost their respective opening matches played on Tuesday. Both gave a tough resistance to their opponents. Dola was defeated by Canada’s Marie-Pier Beaudet and Bombayla lost to Poland’s Iwona Marcinkiewicz. Both the players were neck-to-neck with their rivals but lost only in the deciding shots. Earlier, Indian trio of L Bombayla Devi, Dola Banerjee and Pranitha Vardhineni had lost to China in women’s team event at Olympics on Sunday.

Rathore But worst was yet to happen. Indian camp was stunned to hear the news of Rathore’s failure to qualify in the double trap final. He shot 131 targets that placed him at the 15th position. But he could not qualify for the final as top six shooters had made it to the final. It must be noted that he is the silver medalist of the Athens Olympic games in the same event and was hot favorite to win a medal. He told reporters that “I did not read the targets too well and paid the price.”

india-at-beijing-olympics2.jpeg

Boxers Jitender Kumar stormed into the fly weight pre-quarterfinals boxing by defeating the Turkish Boxer Ulas Furkan Memis in less than three rounds. It was a lopsided match as the Indian was leading in the first round by 5-0 and in the second by 9-2. He remained aggressive throughout the match and easily evaded Memis’ every challenge. Another Indian boxer who has qualified for the pre-quarterfinals is Vijender who has qualified in the middle weight category.

In the Lightweight men’s double sculls heats at the Olympics Indian due of rowers of Devender Kumar Khandwal and Manjeet Singh finished last as they were 21 seconds behind the winners. Meanwhile, 2006’s Melbourne Commonwealth Games’ ‘Gold finger’ Samaresh Jung failed to qualify for the final of 50m pistol event on Tuesday.

Is State of J&K Heading Towards a Split

Tuesday, 12th August, 2008

Kashmir Situation in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir is deteriorating with the passing of every day as people of both of the reason have stood up against each other because of the dispute caused by land transfer issue. It is a well-known fact that people of Jammu are pro-Indians and the Kashmiris are pro-Pakistanis. Kashmir is the area that is worst hit by the Pakistan backed militants. Pakistani army and ISI provides financial and arms’ help to the militants and also facilitates their infiltration into the Indian territory by providing them cover-fire against the Indian Security Forces present at the border.

is-state-of-jk-headind-towards-a-split1.jpeg

Jammu The present crisis has deepened because of the conflicting interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. At one hand Kashmiris agitated against the state government’s decision of land transfer to the Amarnath Shrine Board that resulted in revocation of the order and downfall of the government. But one the other hand it infuriated the Hindu population of the Jammu region who took to streets against the government’s order of revocation of the land transfer. They have blocked the national highway that is the  only road link between Indian and Valley. It will affect the Kashmir a lot as all the essential supplies to the region have been blocked. As apples is the main crop of Kashmiris and it is the peak season time they are unable to send it to India and abroad because of blockade.

is-state-of-jk-headind-towards-a-split2.jpeg

Rift Agitations in both of the reasons are spearheaded by the hardliner fundamentalists. One one hand are Hurriyat leaders and on the other end are Hindu leaders backed by fundamentalist organizations like Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal, RSS and BJP. Though it is headed by political leaders but it has taken a communal turn. Now both of the communities have taken the issue of land transfer as a religious matter that has prompted even women and children to take to streets. It is a very tough situation and there is a very little hope that government will find a middle path to solve the problem. But first priority should be given to control the situation. But it has become clear from the situation that the state is heading towards a split.

Cracks Appear in UNPA

Sunday, 10th August, 2008

UNPA After the withdrawal of support by the Left parties to the UPA led government United National Progressive Alliance had emerged as the third most powerful political option as compared to the NDA and UPA. Though there was no ideological understanding between its various member parties but they had projected BSP supremo Mayawati as their Prime Ministerial candidate for the forthcoming elections for the Lok Sabha.

cracks-appear-in-unpa1.jpeg

Trust Vote But PM Manmohan Singh somehow had succeeded in securing the trust votes and the UPA government survived and it is being expected that it will complete its full term of five years. Before the trust motion it was being expected that PM Manmohan Singh will not succeed in mustering the required support for the survival of the government and election are very near. In the meantime all the UNPA parties, with the help of Left and BSP had formed a third front.

cracks-appear-in-unpa2.jpeg

Third Option It was being considered UNPA will emerge as the strongest alliance after the elections. But everything has changed after the special session of the parliament. Public emotions are not in favor of UPA and it is evident that there are very little chances that it will return to power. On the other hand NDA’s Prime Ministerial candidate L.K. Advani is not a leader of the stature of A.V Vajpayee. In such circumstance UNPA was being seen as the political alternative that can offer someone as an acceptable Prime Ministerial candidate in the forthcoming elections.

cracks-appear-in-unpa3.jpeg

But cracks have started to appear in the UNPA. As some of its member political parties has declined to accept Mayawati as their Prime Ministerial candidate. Some of the parties has said that they will present a third front in front of the people as an alternative to the NDA and UPA in the forthcoming elections but it will be based on common minimum program instead of projecting an individual as Prime Ministerial candidate.

indian-in-2004s-olympics2.jpeg

Archers India had sent a large delegation to participate in the Athens Olympic games. India had emerged as a great power in the event of archery and shooting as they had won most of the recent international events related to these games. But they could not live up to the expectations and only Lt.Col.Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore could won a Silver medal in men’s double trap shooting that was the only medal won by the Indians in the 2004’s Athens Olympic games. Indian archers and shooters could have increased the medal telly but they could not do so because of climate difference and windy conditions in Athens. In men and women’s individual archery events all the Indian competitors did well but could won no medal. Satyadev Prasad(10th place) and Reena Kumari (15th ) performed well. In team events men and women ended with 11th and 8th places respectively.

indian-in-2004s-olympics3.jpeg

Athletics In athletics Indians showed some improvement as compared to the previous games . K. Mathews Binu performed well and succeeded to reach the semifinal of men’s 400 meter’s race. Women’s 4 x 400 meters relay team ended with the seventh place in the final. Women long jumper Anju Bobby George kept Indian’s hopes of wining a medal alive but ended with the sixth place in the final. Indian due of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes ended with the fourth position in men’s doubles tennis. Rest of the Indian players’ performance was average in their respective games. Indian hockey team once again disappointed the fans as they ended with the 7th position. But Athens games had revealed one thing that Indians are an emerging power in the games of archery and shooting. They missed some of the medals because of windy conditions but this time story will be different from the past as in China climate conditions are similar to India.

Security Measures Indian Railways is one of the the world’s largest transportation network that is considered to be the busiest in the world. For many years it was unable to give profits to the government. That affected its growth. There are lakhs of unmanned railway crossings and the department is slowly but steadily solving its security  problems as for as the security of the passengers is concerned. Fire in the compartments was not because of some negligence but can be said as a misfortune. It was a misfortune that when the fire broke out most of the passengers were sleeping otherwise it could have bee prevented before it could turn into a major catastrophe.

Distraction Most of the diamond polishing units are located in the Varacha area of Surat city and most of the bombs were found in and around the area. It was fortunate enough that none of the bombs exploded and were found and defused in time. Tuesday was the third consecutive day and police had defused 18 bombs. Most of the bombs were planted on trees and hoardings and were spotted mostly by public. There were no timer devices used in then and detonators of some of the bombs were not properly connected to them. It is being considered by the intelligence agencies that Surat has been chosen by the militants to distract the ongoing investigations in the Bangalore and Ahmadabad serial blasts.

Suspicion But wave of panic spread to Rajasthan when on Thursday three live bombs of low intensity packed in plastic bags, were notices by some of the villagers of Pali district on the road. They were defused on the spot. It is being considered that these serial blasts were planned and executed by some terrorist group or by the Underworld don who is presently hiding in Pakistan and has close relations with ISI.

Target For some years India has become a soft target of the militant activities. Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence is infamous for its India centric activities. It is trying every means to destabilize India by fueling insurgency all over the country. There is a close relationship between ISI and the Pak military and Taliban. It has played an important role in the establishment of madarassas in Bangladesh and Pakistan. These madarassas has turned out to be the recruiting bases of militants. Pak government has not succeeded to free it form Taliban supporting elements and exert its control over it. Though Pakistani government is trying to normalize the strained relations with India but increase in militancy has always created problems. Peace can be established only when ISI comes under the control of elected government of Pakistan and is purged from the fundamentalists who have always considered India as their number one enemy.
